Research Focus

At SIDC, our research focus is dedicated to enhancing preparedness and response capabilities against infectious diseases, particularly those of economic importance.

By leveraging scientific innovation and collaboration, we strive to deepen our understanding of infectious diseases, address critical challenges in disease surveillance, diagnosis, and management, and develop effective strategies for their prevention and control.

Disease Surveillance

We aim to develop innovative methods for real-time monitoring of economically significant diseases, enabling swift detection, diagnosis, and implementation of response measures.

  • To identify the health statuses of the community.
  • To systematically gather, analyse, and interpret health data early detection of potential outbreaks.
  • PREPAREDNESS – To monitor disease trends and inform prevention and control measures for effective response readiness.
  • To identify health and disease patterns and risks – guiding priortisation of resources and policy decisions.
  • To achieve health equity in attaining the highest level of health.

Diagnostics

We are dedicated to creating rapid, user-friendly, and cost-effective diagnostic kits that deliver swift and precise results, facilitating timely disease diagnosis in clinical and field settings. Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap to bring diagnostics tailored for resource-limited environments directly to the communities in need.

  • To develop novel diagnostic technologies capable of detecting a wide range of diseases effectively and accurately.
  • To explore point-of-care diagnostic solutions for decentralised healthcare delivery to reach wider populations.
  • To identify biomarkers or molecular signatures suited for early disease detection and prognosis.
  • To establish equitable access for the community to intuitive, feasible, and cost-effective diagnostic tools.

Therapeutics

We focus on devising novel therapeutic strategies with better efficacy and lesser burden to the patient. The drug discovery unit seeks to translate lab findings into a viable and accessible treatment for the mass public.

  • To explore better treatment options for the patients through a multidisciplinary approach.
  • To identify novel compounds (oligopeptides or RNAs) or strategies (drug delivery system, gene editing) that enable targeted therapy to improve efficacy and minimise side effects.
  • To perform sophisticated pre-clinical testing on drug safety and efficacy.
  • To build up the capacity and capital to conduct multiple-phase clinical trials.

Vaccine Development

Using state-of-the-art research, SIDC is keen on developing vaccines that will address the endemic threat in Sarawak. We aim to expedite vaccine technology transfer into the state through collaborative efforts with proven industrial partners. This approach will equip SIDC with the capacity to manufacture vaccines within this decade.

  • To channel SIDC R&D resources into preventing diseases relevant to the local setting.
  • To establish a good manufacturing practice (GMP) certified vaccine production plant.
  • The plant will scale up local vaccine production for self-sustenance and help address regional demands.
  • PREPAREDNESS – The production line can support the manufacturing of high-demand vaccines in times of emergency, such as during a pandemic or outbreak.
  • The manufacturing framework will provide a commercialisation pipeline for future vaccine development.
